A thoughtful, elevated look back on the intertwined lives of five notable Americans. John Hay is the primary common thread, but attention is devoted to the other four (Lincoln, Twain, James, and TR) in nearly equal amounts. Another common thread is the literary ability and command of the English language of each of the five: they could all speak and write with uncommon force.A very good book for one interested in the cultural and political history of the United States from about 1860 to 1910.For those interested in this era , I suggest also exploring the two-volume set of "The Letters and Friendships of Sir Cecil Spring Rice" (1929). Spring Rice, an English diplomat, was best man for Theodore Roosevelt's second wedding and knew John Hay and Henry Adams well.After reading Mr. McFarland's fine book, I am even more convinced that John Hay should be invited to my imagined literary dinner party of four, one that would also include as guests James Boswell and Eddie Marsh.
