I'll read anything AH writes. I enjoyed this book on some levels, but it's not up to AH standards.SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS ahead.The plot--Multiple kidnappings strung together do not make a real plot. I understand the need to get the 2 main characters together, but AH is very talented, and could do that without the wash, rinse, repeat cycle of kidnappings.The H--He's pretty standard in the world of AH heroes. He's a bit more petulant than I expected with the h's initial rejection, but it's not a showstopper. Overall, he's hot stuff.The h--i have some issues. She's a wounded bird, trying to get on her feet, a bit fiesty, all things we readers love. But she also drones on and on and on and ON about being off men, and how she and the H shouldn't be together. It was way, way too much. At 42% of this book, she was still yammering on about the same stuff. This doesn't endear a female character to our hearts. Also, the h did one too many TSTL things. Example--after being snatched 2x, she steps out to help a caterer. What? This seemed to be another in-your-face example of her selflessness, but it wasn't necessary. It was already more than clearly established, over and over (again). Instead, it became another example of the h character doing something stupid. Nope, nope, nope. I wanted to like her but had difficulty because of those two characteristics.The ending--AH has typically been pretty good about introducing interest in the next book. That being said--shooting at each other during a party? People largely behaving as if that's normal? One of the established characters suddenly exhibiting new traits? Possibly being a secret spy? The same character who was deemed not up to snuff to "protect" the h throughout the book? Hmm.Finally, the painting. Ok. This is a novel, a make-believe story. But "Waterlilies?" That's right up there with the Mona Lisa. This museum is not described like the Met, or the Louve. It sounds pretty much like a third tier museum. Even in a made-up novel, you have to be somewhat realistic if you use current, well-known touchstones. It didn't balance with the described institution. A small thing, i know...but it set an off-balance tone that colored the story.AH is one of my top 3 favorite authors. I've read everything she's written, and given tons of glowing but fair reviews. This book doesn't hit the mark that AH herself established with all her previous writing.
